Silly Rabbit, Forget About Natural Colors and Flavors

Trix cereal

Because many customers complained that Trix cereal wasn’t as neon bright or as flavorful as what they remembered, General Mills has decided to switch back to artificial colors and flavors. Trix cereal formula was changed in 2016 to use all natural ingredients to color and flavor the cereal like fruit and vegetable juices and spice extracts (turmeric, annatto).

From their press release in 2015,

Trix will now use ingredients like fruit and vegetable juices and spice extracts such as turmeric and annatto to achieve the fun red, yellow, orange and purple colors…By the end of 2017, the goal is to have all General Mills cereals free from artificial flavors and colors from artificial sources.

Changing up a recipe for a popular product like an established cereal brand is hard work. But it looks like all their hard work to remove artificial ingredients doesn’t really matter if their core customer base wants the artificial ingredients in the first place.
